Providing an Outdoor Experience for the Young and not so Young
Ballyhornan Scout Centre is owned and maintained by Down and Connor Scout County, Scouting Ireland. The Centre is located in Ballyhornan Village, five miles from Strangford and seven miles from Downpatrick.
The Centre comprises two accommodation blocks with a total of 56 beds, a wardens’ hut, a leader “Chill Zone” and a state of the art canteen facility.

There is also a central hall, which is suitable for indoor activities and which can act as a “scout hall”. The Centre has a number of indoor games available for use including: Uni-Hoc, Table Tennis, Table Football, Connect 4 and Giant Jenga. Please note that football is not permitted on site.
The Centre is used extensively for training of adult leaders. Pictured below are participants on a “Being a Scouter” course held on 10th/11th of March 2018.
The Centre also has an outdoor BBQ area and Pizza oven.
The Centre has a limited store of pioneering equipment, including a number of spars, rope and pulley blocks. A campfire circle allows users to serenade local inhabitants with scouting favorites!
Ballyhornan beach is approximately 200 metres from the Centre and allows for games and swimming, under supervision.
The Centre has litter picking equipment to help maintain the cleanliness of the beach and user groups are encouraged to programme 30 minutes during their stay to help with the local environment.
Exploris Aquarium is located in Portaferry, approx. 5 miles from the centre via. the Strangford ferry.
